What is an LMD system?

L.M.D. system: A new structure for Algeria’s higher education system centred around three degrees: L:Bachelor’s degree M: Master and D: PhD, which has been in force in Algeria since September 2004.

Basic concepts that you should know about the LMD system

Semester It is a periodic teaching period, the duration of which is determined by an average of 14 weeks.

Area

A area of training, divided into branches and branches into specializations

Branch

Branch is part of a area. Determines the specificity of a single or multidisciplinary training

Specialization

Specialization Part of a branch. It determines the training path and the competencies that the student must acquire.

 

The educational unit Consists of one or more subjects, which are guaranteed according to several educational forms (lessons, directed work and practical work)
 
01 Coefficients Measure and weigh the importance of the subject within a specific educational unit in relation to the rest of the subjects that make up the educational unit
 
02 Balances Express the amount of work necessary for the student to control the knowledge contained within an educational unit. The credit is estimated at 20 to 25 working hours (in-person + personal work) The semester consists of 30 credits
 
03 Credits are acquired Meaning that acquiring any educational unit or subject leads to the final acquisition of its credits.
 
04 Transfer of credits This means that the student who has these credits can benefit from them in another training course (provided that this transfer is accepted by the receiving training team.
 
Each semester contains 30 credits. Each certificate is equivalent to the acquisition of 180 credits for the Bachelor’s degree and 120 additional credits for the Master’s degree.
